keyboard software media
This page lists my collection and general info about music cartridges and
other original software media for electronic musical instruments. Not listed
here are media those were neither sold separately nor interchangeable among
multiple instrument models.
Important: Do not ask me where to buy new software for your keyboard.
Most of these media have not been made anymore for over a decade, and I
also don't know where to find them. Try eBay, but even there they
are rarely offered separately, but usually come only together with a used
keyboard.
Casio barcode
music
Casio barcode score sheets (genuinely called "MS memory"?) were a technology
to scan digital music data from special barcode songbooks into the internal
sequencer memory of a keyboard using a barcode pen. The use of that pen
needed training and worked poorly under bad lighting conditions. Also the
quality of this music was bad, because it consisted only of a monophonic
main voice with optional simple standard accompaniment. Despite the songs
contained neither rhythm nor instrumentation data and you had to scan up
to 2 full pages of barcode rows for some of them, most melodies were disappointingly
short. Casio barcode score sheets were introduced with the Casio
MT-70 and VL-5 (the latter
even without any accompaniment) and fortunately soon abandoned in favour
for the by magnitudes better ROM-Pack
technology.
In the ancient home computer magazine "Your Spectrum" (Issue
4, June 1984) was an article about connecting a Sinclair ZX Spectrum
home computer with the barcode reader input of a Casio
VL-5. This article contains a BASIC program and many technical
details about the data format of the Casio barcode song books, and it says
that the same program works also with the Casio
MT-70. The article can be found here.
barcode score sheets from Casio MT-70
This stack of separate barcode sheets came with the lesson book that ws
shipped with my Casio MT-70. The
barcode sheets itself have neither release date nor copyright marks but
only page numbers, and the corresponding human readable musical score is
in the lesson book. A bit bizarre is that most songs are marked "traditional"
or "folk song" despite at least some of them are not that old. Possibly
Casio attempted to circumvent to pay royalties to their genuine composers.
The melody voice of these songs works also with my Casio
VL-5, but the chord voice shows only an error.
These are the 14 songs sorted by page number:
-
Symphony No.9 in D minor, "Choral" (by L. v. Beethoven)
-
From the New World (by A. Dvorãk)
-
Jingle Bells
-
When the Saints Go Marchin' In (American folk song)

"Bar Code Score Book" from Casio
VL-5
This barcode song book came with my 2nd Casio
VL-5. Unlike the Casio MT-70
barcode sheets, it is not a stack of loose pages and the barcode tracks
include no chord voice (which is not supported by the VL-5) and thus consist
only of a monophonic main voice. The songs come with human readable score
and marks for the intended manual settings for preset sound, preset
rhythm, sustain, tempo and balance.
-
Romance De L'Amour (Old Spanish Song)
-
Cielito Lindo (Traditional)
-
Sonata (by W. A. Mozart)
-
Red River Valley (Traditional)
-
From the New World (by A. Dvorãk)
-
K A T I-O W A (Russian Air) [name written in cyrillic letters]
-
Santa Lucia (Italian Folk Song)
-
Jingle Bells (Traditional)
-
When the Saints Go Marchin' In (American Folk Song)
-
The House of the Rising Sun (Traditional)

Casio ROM-Packs
ROM-Packs are cartridges those contain digital music data similar to MIDI
files stored on a ROM IC. They were used by older Casio keyboards;
most of them had a "melody guide" key lighting feature. ROM-Pack musics
were usually nicely arranged and old ones often came with a musical score
book, that also properly lists the original composers and release years
of the songs. The musics consist of a main voice, a 2nd voice (called obligato)
and a couple of rhythms with standard accompaniments including breaks and
fill-ins. The ROM-Pack format was introduced first with the Casio
MT-800 keyboard, and all ROM-Packs were apparently published by
Sight
& Sound International Inc. The cartridges employs the same conductive
carbonized silicone rubber connector that is used in many LCD wrist watch
displays. Also a user programmable "RAM-Pack" version of these cartridges
came out (Casio RA-1),
but the only instrument that could write them was the Casio
PT-50.

This cartridge has a "not for sale" notice and was shipped with the first
Casio ROM-Pack keyboards like Casio MT-800
and PT-50. It is quite strange that
these old instruments were shipped with a 15 song cartridge, while later
Casio keyboards came with ROM-Packs with each only 4 songs, despite the
price of ROM capacity certainly didn't increase over the years. In the
manual of this cartridge mentions that it was released in 1983 by Sight
& Sound International Inc. and advertises several other ROM-Packs
with also each at least 14 songs. Unlike my other ROM-Packs, the RO-201
has a shiny sheet metal bottom instead of the usual black plastic one.

on the keyboard) an old home organ in an American wedding chapel. This
is not the overused flat ironed pop xmas muzak stuffs you hear everywhere
as elevator music. Not all songs use rhythm, and even the others don't
play rhythm all the time constantly but rather drum like a Salvation Army's
band than average slimy "easy listening" CDs.

Old Folks At Home
All these musics have a great and complex orchestrated arrangement. This
cartridge has a "not for sale" notice and was shipped with later small
ROM-Pack keyboards including Casio PT-80,
MT-18,
PT-82
and PT-87.
Interesting is that the in Germany quite unknown German folk song "Unterlanders
Heimweh" was also the demo tune of the VL-Tone
1 and was also used in various Casio pocket calculators (e.g. my
Casio
ML-90). A badly detuned short clip of the melody was even used in the
"rating" sound effects of the Casio
PT-82 "melody guide" play teaching feature, and later the melody
appeared as one song among many in various "song bank" keyboards. Thus
"Unterlanders Heimweh" can be likely regarded as something like an unofficial
Casio anthem. To me it was at least one of my childhood key experiences
with electronic music, and the version on this cartridge has a wonderful
orchestrated arrangement. But I am not sure if this is the correct name
of this tune, because despite the ROM-Pack RO-551 lists this name, I bought
a Casio MT-36 which demo tune is
also called "Unterlanders Heimweh" in the manual, and this tune is a rural
folk waltz piece that is very different from the VL-1 melody. I also bought
an Elite MC2200 keyboard that has
many demo tunes of those one is labelled "UMTERLANDERS AEIMWEH" (regard
the typo), and a Letron MC-38 that
includes it also (misspelled "UMTERLANDERS HEIMWEH), but both tunes corresponds
to the MT-36 demo and not to the famous demo of the VL-1.

that came in 1983 with my Casio MT-800.
The ad mentions also a "Casio International Music Club" where people
could subscribe for mail ordering info about new Casio music products and
software (including new ROM-Packs). Note that these old ROM-Packs contained
14 to 18 songs each, while later ones had way fewer. Unfortunately the
ROM-Pack number is not mentioned there (where present, I saw them on eBay).

Yamaha PlayCards
PlayCards are musical score cards made of cardboard with printed
musical score on its front and a magnetic data tape strip at its lower
rim that contains digital music data similar to MIDI files. They were used
by Yamaha's early key lighting keyboards, and each card contained
one song. The PlayCard System was introduced first in 1982 with
the Yamaha PC-100. Despite the
technically simpler media, the capabilities and complexity of PlayCard
musics was very similar like its competitor
Casio
ROM-Pack. The tempo and arpeggio volume of PlayCard musics had
to be set manually through analogue sliders, therefore the intended slider
setting was printed on the cards. Because Yamaha unfortunately removed
the arpeggio feature from their later PlayCard keyboards, the arpeggio
volume mark was omitted on later PlayCards.
